Green Smoothies

I have been making green smoothies on and off for a couple of years. I would do this in my magic bullet. And it just wasn't big enough for the whole family. I really didn't have a nice blender, so the texture wasn't so great. I decided a couple of months ago that I really wanted to make them everyday. But I needed to find a good high powered blender. I did a lot of research on blenders. The blendtec, vitamix, kitchen aid, and omni blenders were the 4 I was trying to decide between. The blendtec and vitamix were so expensive, I was hesitant to buy one but I new they worked really well. I bought a kitchen aid because of the price and I got it from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, so I could return it. It was an okay blender but not the best quality. It had plastic rotating parts and we figured it would break soon with the amount of stuff we put in it. I found Omni blenders online. And then found out the guy selling them lived right here in Utah. I called him and got a lot of information. He was really nice and he let us come out to his house so we could demo the omni blender. We loved it, it was good quality and it blended through everything really fast. He sold one to us for $200. That is a screaming good deal for how nice this blender is. It is not as cute as a blendtec but it still fits under my counter unlike the vitamix or kitchen aid. It is not as loud as the other blenders and it has done an amazing job and it has a 7 year warranty. We have been really happy with it.

Now to the "Why, are you making green smoothies? And what do you put in them?" These are questions a lot of people have asked. I started doing this a while ago to sneak more fruits and vegis into my kids diet without them knowing. I would throw whatever frozen or fresh vegis I had in with a bunch of fruit and give the kids a smoothie. The last while I have been really interested in learning how to make green smoothies the "right way" if there is one. As I was really getting into this I saw an SUV parked at a Chiropractors office that said www.greensmoothiegirl.com I came right home and looked it up. This lady, Robyn Openshaw, is from Lindon Utah and she has done years and years of research on nutrition. As I was reading on her website I was so intrigued. It was just what I was looking for. I had been wanting to change our diet to a more whole/raw foods diet because the more I researched depression for Jon the more I found out that processed food causes depression. Jon was really interested as well. I signed up for one of her classes and it was so interesting. She talked about a lot of stuff that was foreign to me, fomenting seeds, grains and nuts, using kiefer instead of yogurt and all sorts of other things. I bought her book The Green Smoothie Diet. Jon and I both read it and loved it. I also bought a kids book that she wrote called, The Adventures of Junk Food Dude. That is an awesome book for anyone trying to convince their kids to eat healthier. The kids loved it and now they make better chooses with eating. I want to buy her program 12 steps to whole foods but we have to save up a little money because it is kind of expensive. And we don't want to change everything all at once. We are going to change a little at a time, hoping to make it be a lifestyle change. This will be an exciting journey to learn about health, nutrition and the benefits of eating healthy. It is funny really, so basic and smart. It is all in the word of wisdom. But our lifestyle is so different from the good old days. We buy everything in a can or a box, nuke it in the microwave and think we are eating okay. Some of that is just pure convenience and I love that too. But I think we have gotten so far off the wagon of what was put here on the earth for us to eat that we are all suffering physically and mentally. I don't mean to preach to any of you. I think sometimes you have to be convinced to change. And for some reason, that time is right now for us. And I want to write about this for our blog, aka, family journal.

We put all sorts of things in our smoothies. What we try to do is 5 cups of vegis to 2 cups of fruit. Here is a list of stuff we have tried. spinach, kale, collard greens, celery, broccoli, romaine, carrots, beets, oranges, apples, berries, lemons, limes, strawberries, bananas, peaches, pineapple, coconut, almonds, cashews, almond milk, coconut milk, rice milk, kiefer, flax seed, flax seed oil, wheat germ, oatmeal, and the list could go on. We added three more boxes to our garden and we are going to do square foot gardening. Hopefully to get a lot more produce so that we can freeze some of what we can't use for the winter. It is fun to experiment with. Yes, the kids drink them and love it! And we have all felt the benefits of drinking green smoothies everyday.

Ava 10 months old

In the last few months Ava has grown up so much. I love kissing her beautiful little face. And making her laugh. She loves playing peek a boo. If you say, "Where's Ava?" She will put her hands or a blanket over her face and then move them really fast when you say "boo". It is so cute. She laughs at everything and her laugh is so contagious. Ava started crawling at 8 months. She would roll and scoot before that but at about 8 months she just took off. She can get just about anywhere. She loves climbing up and sliding down the stairs. She loves to stand up and walk across furniture. She is really fast and she likes us to chase her around. She gets into everything. She loves pulling everything out of the pantry and kitchen drawers. She loves to follow Calvin and Lily around and play with them. At her nine month Dr. appointment she weighed 18 lbs 13 oz and she was 28 inches long. That is 50% percentile for both. She has two new teeth on the top, they are the ones next to the middle. So she has two on top and two on bottom. She loves to eat, she loves to try everything we are eating, and she loves to stick her hands in her food and rub it everywhere. She babbles a lot! She can say mama, dada, baba, nana, hi, and all sort of other jibberish. She can shake her head no, no and nod her head yes. She will wave and clap her hands. She gets really excited and jumps or bounces up and down and claps. It is my favorite thing to watch her clap, because her face lights up when her hands make the clapping sound. She brings so much joy to our life. She is so happy and fun. We just love her so much. To sum it up, the other day Calvin said, "Mom, I don't want Ava to grow up because I want her to laugh like this forever. She is so cute!"

Ava didn't want to have her pictures taken. She just wanted to crawl around. Consequently, most of these are blurry from movement. But she did give me this half hearted smile when we let her play with Lily's fuzzy wuzzy.
